NADE Visits Capitol Hill
by Martha Marshall, Legislative Chair
FOLLOWING THE MEETING WITH COMMISSIONER
Apfel and Mr. Dyer, meetings were held with Alexander Vachon, Chief Social
Security Analyst for the Senate Finance Committee and Beverly Crawford,
Professional Staff of the House Committee on Ways and Means, Subcommittee
on Social Security. A meeting scheduled with Representative Clay Shaw,
Chair of the Subcommittee on Social Security, was cancelled because the
House was holding hearings on Social Security reform. (Representatives
Shaw and Archer have proposed legislation on Social Security Reform.) However,
Jeff and Terri were able to attend the Hearing while Martha met with a
staff member of Representative Sander Levin (D-MI). NADE’s plans to prepare
a Discussion Paper on the five month waiting period were discussed in the
meeting with the Commissioner and with the legislative representatives.
The Social Security reform activities currently under discussion actually
involve more than solvency issues. Congressional staffers contacted felt
that the five month waiting period issue is a timely and relevant initiative.
