Bush Picks SSAB Member To Lead Social Security

PRESIDENT BUSH HAS NOMINATED Jo Anne Barnhart, to be the next Commissioner of Social Security. A member of the Social Security Advisory Board since 1997, Ms. Barnhart served during the first Bush and Reagan administrations in the Social Security, Family Support and the Children and Families agencies. Ms. Barnhart worked as an ad-ministrative assistant in the 1970s, campaign manager and consultant in the 1990s to Senator William V. Roth (R-De), and served as SSA's Associate Commissioner for Family Assistance from 1983 to 1986. She later served as minority staff director of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee in 1986. If confirmed by the Senate, she would replace acting commissioner Larry G. Massanari.
