Council of Chapter Presidents Meet In Austin, Texas
by Chuck Schimmels, Southwest Regional Director

THE COUNCIL OF CHAPTER PRESIDENTS met on October 31st at the NADE 2001 conference. What a way to start your Halloween with outgoing C.C.P. chair Dean Crawford passing out candy to all the representatives present. Dean announced that the Chapter Services Handbook was now available on zip disk and should help make updating the handbook easier in the future. Dean provided a brief training on “6 Steps to Productive Delegating”. To do these things, he reported that you should encourage them and cultivate their ownership of the organization. The following is an outline of the steps.

• Clearly define the task (give them the opportunity to complete it)

• Give guidelines to begin or follow

• Give the authority to accomplish the task

• Monitor the task (but don’t hover)

• Give feedback along the way

• Reward and Recognize efforts, as well as results

The regular business meeting included a special report from Linda Corkren from Baton Rouge, LA. She presented an idea for all chapters to consider. Her local BRADE chapter was providing a Social Support Monitoring service to all new employees. This is a program not to teach, but provide positive information about the office to help prevent such a high turnover rate. They give about 15 minutes a week to new examiners in a one-on-one setting to provide information on office hours, dress codes, and other minor information to help in the transitional process. They have also started a shadowing project for new clerical. The program allows them to shadow other clerical jobs that they may want to apply for in the future. They are providing them with self-enhancement skills, such as interviewing skills to help them compete for better paying jobs. This was a project that was well received and many other chapters hope to try the program out when they get back. This could be used as a new recruiting tool since the best recruiting comes from one to one conversations.

The meeting ending with Dean reporting that he had enjoyed representing the CCP for the last three years and looked forward to them continuing to have a strong voice in the future. He passed the Zip Disk with the Chapter Services Handbook to the new CCP Chair Jane Bradley since there was no gavel to pass. Jane welcomed the opportunity to serve the CCP and reported that she would work hard to fill the shoes vacated by Dean.
