The Secret To Our Being Strong
by Jean Houston Shore For NADE Southeast Regional Meeting
May 12, 2000
We’re working all together serving those with many needs. “Good morning.” (Stacks of records piled as high as I can see.) Most days I’m overloaded, underpaid and I don’t see That the Secret to our Being Strong is Our Diversity.
We come from varied backgrounds, many ages, different strengths. We don’t always see eye-to-eye, on that we can agree. But ask us what we care for most? It’s disability! See, the Secret to our Being Strong is Our Diversity.
It’s years to really learn this job and then, some people leave! So those remaining take on more, work hard, (forget to breathe!) We chase down Doctor’s records and make sure apps are complete. Still, the Secret to our Being Strong is Our Diversity.
We court the public’s confidence they say “We’ll wait and see.” They just don’t “get” the work we do, don’t see what we’ve achieved. But still we process, learn and grow for inside we believe That the Secret to our Being Strong is In Diversity.
So we’re strong by being different, a common Bond must be the key. CDR’s are NOT our main responsibility! We sustain disabled persons; we show the way for those in need Yes, the secret to our Being Strong IS OUR DIVERSITY!
